Meroë became a major centre of iron production and trade, linking Central Africa with the Mediterranean world.

Kushites developed Meroitic, one of the oldest written languages of Africa. It can be read aloud, but much of it has not yet been fully translated.

The Archaeological Sites of the Island of Meroë are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
